Rue du Sainte Marseille

Paul Mauriat was born on March 4, 1925, the youngest of four children, in an apartment near the Old Port at 151, rue du Sainte, Marseille. The area around the Old Port (Vieux Paul) is the downtown of Marseille. There is a market and a morning fish market on the quayside of the Old Port, and the area is full of humanity.

In the apartment of the Mauriat family, whose father was a humble post office clerk, there was a piano. At the age of four, Paul used the piano as a plaything, playing the keys at random; at five, he surprised his family by playing a tune he had heard by ear.

Seeing this, Paul's father, an amateur musician, gave him a full-fledged musical education. Paul was very happy to take lessons for one to two hours every day. This was due to his father's excellent musical education methods and Paul's sensitivity, which enabled him to fully appreciate the joy of music. From the age of 10 to 16, he continued his musical studies at the Conservatoire de Marseille (Conservatoire National de Musique) in the academy setting.
