SLEEVE NOTES:
This is perhaps one of the most unique and, for us, most delightful of the Paul Mauriat Grand Orchestra's many recordings. Recorded in Paris in June of 1976, this is a landmark recording, the realization of a three-year dream of Paul Mauriat who, after many successful performances on his frequent visits to Japan, has decided to thank the country for its warm welcome. Paul Mauriat himself composed, arranged, and conducted the music.
Memories of Yesterday:
On the day of the Sapporo concert, Paul Mauriat heard from one of his fans a legend of a tragic love story about Lake Mashu, and wrote this song as a requiem for the hero of the story. It is a short piece of just over two minutes, but it seems to express the sorrow of the young lovers who threw themselves into the emerald lake. It is an impressive piece of music.
L'etoile de Mer:
On the day of the Sendai concert, Paul Mauriat was inspired by the nearby Matsushima island, and drew this piece to depict a tranquil autumn scene of Matsushima Bay, with its beautiful blue sea and green pine trees. The slow samba rhythm, reminiscent of the sound of lapping waves, provides a refreshing performance. The title in French means "Star of the Sea," or a "Starfish".
